A wrongful death, negligence, gross negligence, and intentional infliction of emotional distress lawsuit filed in Connecticut claims a safari tour company is responsible for the death of a woman, Lisa Manders, who was killed in a hippo attack during a safari in Zambia. The suit, filed by her husband, Craig Manders, accuses the tour company, African Portfolio, of negligence, including lax safety protocols and improper training of guides.
During a “bush walk” organized by the company, one guide allegedly encouraged the couple to approach a hippo, which was partially submerged in a body of water. After the guide left them alone, the hippo suddenly charged, attacking Lisa Manders. Despite her attempts to flee, the hippo violently attacked her, causing fatal injuries.
The lawsuit includes claims of wrongful death, negligence, gross negligence, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. This case highlights the importance of proper safety measures and training when organizing and conducting tours in environments where dangerous wildlife is present.
The case is Craig Manders v. African Portfolio Inc., case number FST-CV-25-6071625-S, in the Stamford Norwalk Judicial District of the Connecticut Superior Court. Plaintiffs are represented by Slager Madry, LLC.
